Volunteer Job DescriptionsWhat Do Animal Services Volunteers Do?Kennel and Cattery Monitor Kennel and cattery monitors interact with customers and monitor customer interactions with the animals. Monitors ask people to refrain from touching or antagonizing the animals, and direct customers to the hand sanitizer dispensers if they do touch an animal. Effective monitors can help reduce the transmission of disease between animals. Monitors need excellent customer service skills and enough knowledge of the shelter to answer customer's basic questions. Shelter Door Greeter Door greeters welcome customers to Animal Services, direct visitors to the appropriate area of the shelter, answer basic questions, and instruct customers on how to complete lost cards. Door greeters must have excellent customer service skills. Adoption Assistant Adoption assistants follow up with clients to make sure that they feel satisfied with our adoption process and that they are developing healthy relationships with their new pets. Tasks include making short phone calls to adopters two weeks after the adoption, and again at six months after, and filling out standardized forms during each call. This job can be done from home, though the volunteer will need to deliver and pick up forms from the shelter or have access to email. Adoption assistants must have excellent phone and customer service skills. This person will need basic knowledge of pet problem solving techniques and pet training. Field Assistant (Information Distribution) Field assistants work independently in the field distributing literature regarding ordinances, including licensing and the number of animals allowed per residence. Field assistants must be able to keep detailed records regarding distribution and must be physically able to walk or move between residences while carrying the materials to be distributed. Field assistants should also have good customer service skills.
