Animal Care Specialist Volunteers

Animal Care Specialists are responsible for all the feeding, cleaning, “Get-Acquainted” visits, and dog-to-dog meetings that go on in the shelter. These shelter operations are time consuming, but essential to the running of our shelter. Animal Care Specialist Volunteers need to:

  • assist staff with laundry and dishes
  • walk with both dogs and cats
  • possess great people skills
  • be able to assist with educating potential adopters about animal care and behaviors
  • learn how to safely introduce dogs to other dogs, and interpret the behavior of the dogs
  • help with cleaning kennels
  • and be able to learn about animal behavior, shelter diseases, and shelter protocol

Training Process:

Animal Care Specialist Volunteers will need to meet with Volunteer Coordinator and Shelter Supervisor to ensure a good fit. Volunteers will then go through at least a day long training process to learn the necessary skills and protocol. Animal Care Specialist Volunteers should be able to commit to at least 4 hours per week.

Why be an Animal Care Specialist Volunteer?

Animal Care Specialist Volunteers are essential in many ways, not only by helping with animal care, but by encouraging and educating potential adopters, and helping make sure all the animals receive the care and attention they need!
