What Will Happen to the Stray I Found?

The animal shelter is a safe haven for all kinds of lost and abandoned pets. The following is the procedure for an animal entering our shelter.

• A history is taken from the agent (person bringing in the animal) or from the officer. This includes information such as where the animal was found and how long it had been there.  If the animal has any type of identification, an attempt is made immediately to contact the owner.
• The animal information is put into a computerized database.
• An Animal Care Specialist takes the animal to our intake area. The animal is checked over for any injuries, signs of illness, etc. The animal is scanned for a microchip and checked for any identification tattoos, markings, etc.
• A digital photograph is taken of the animal and put on our website. Photos are updated four times every day.
• The animal is placed in our public kennel area, unless it is injured, ill or aggressive. The animal will wait there for his/her family to hopefully come. If an animal is injured, ill or aggressive, the animal is placed in our isolation area and a photo will be put on a bulletin board in our lobby.
• All animals must complete a stray holding period for their owners to claim them. This varies from a minimum of 3 days up to 10 days depending on the animal circumstances.
• If the animal is not claimed by its owner, and it is healthy and friendly, he/she will be made available for adoption. Customers may put adoption holds on animals that are still completing their stray holding time. If they become available for adoption, we will call you and set an adoption appointment.
